akronOfficer honoredAKRON: The University of Akron and the city have honored Marling “Newt” Engle for his work in the community.Engle, who retired as the assistant chief of the UA police department on July 15 with 34.7 years of service, received a proclamation from Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic on Wednesday during the annual ZIPNIC outdoor event at Buchtel Field.UA police Chief Paul J. Callahan read the proclamation and praised Engle for his work on the police force and as the Zips rifle coach for the past 33 years.Engle said he will continue to coach the rifle team during his retirement from the UA police force and also plans to spend more time with his wife, daughters and grandchildren.Engle joined the UAPD as a patrolman on Feb. 2, 1979, was promoted to sergeant in 1985, captain in 1990 and major/assistant chief in 2000. He graduated from UA with an associate degree in Criminal Justice and a bachelors degree in political science.Two shotAKRON: Two Cleveland men were shot and an Akron man was found unconscious after a fight near a downtown Akron parking lot early Friday, police said.All three men were being treated at Akron-area hospitals for what police describe as non-threatening injuries. No suspects have been identified.The shootings unfolded about 2:30 a.m., police say, when a fight inside Club Rose’, at 271 S. Main St., spilled outside. The group eventually moved toward a parking lot in the 200 block of South High Street.Police say the Cleveland men, ages 22 and 19, were trying to leave the parking lot when gunfire erupted. One man was shot in the abdomen, the other in the right arm and buttocks, police said.A 21-year-old Akron man was knocked unconscious during the fight, police said.Anyone with information is asked to call Akron police at 330-375-2490. Derek Wyatt during its annual Sept. 11 commemoration. The ball field at Reservoir Park at 1735 Hillside Terrace will be dedicated to the memory of Wyatt at 2 p.m. Sunday.Wyatt, 25, an East High School graduate, was killed in Afghanistan Dec. 6, 2010. Parking will be available at a Reservoir Park parking lot on Brittain Road as well as off Goodyear Boulevard. At 1:45 p.m. Sunday there will be a procession of family members led by an Akron police and fire color guard from the Goodyear Heights United Methodist Church to the ball field where Wyatt was an All-City Series second baseman for the 2004 East High School city championship team. Castagnola, 25, was convicted late Thursday in a trial before Summit County Common Pleas Judge Tom Parker.Castagnola was arrested by Twinsburg police in June 2010, accused of retaliating against the city law director, who had prosecuted Castagnola for selling alcohol to a minor. As part of that investigation, police obtained a search warrant and seized Castagnola’s home computer. In an analysis of the computer files by the state crime lab, hundreds of images and videos of child pornography were found, prosecutors said.A Summit County jury convicted Castagnola of the retaliation charge and other offenses in May. He will be sentenced by Parker in both cases on Oct. 18, court officials said.
